Corn grain is one of the most important cereals used as an energy supplement in the rations of farm animals.
It is a herbaceous plant belonging to the grass (Poaceae) family and is widely used in the feed industry as animal feed and for flour production. When considered as a standard cereal, corn grain is low in crude fiber and serves as a palatable and high-energy feed source. In addition, since corn does not contain significant anti-nutritional factors, it can be used in animal nutrition with minimal processing.
Ruminant animals can efficiently consume corn grain in whole, lightly cracked, rolled, or cooked (flaked) forms, whereas poultry consume corn after it has been processed to a specific particle size. Furthermore, corn grain is also used in fish and pet animal rations.
