Barley

Barley can be fed to all animals; however, it is particularly suitable for ruminant animals.

Description

There is no significant difference in terms of structure and nutritional value between spring and winter barley varieties or between thin and plump grains. Barley does not have a very high protein content or protein quality. However, it is richer than corn in amino acids such as protein, lysine, tryptophan, and cystine. On the other hand, its high crude fiber content and lower fat content reduce its overall energy value.

Benefits

Barley can be fed to all animals but is especially suitable for ruminants. Except for sheep and goats, barley should be coarsely cracked or rolled before being fed to animals. Otherwise, a significant portion of barley grains fed to animals such as horses, mules, cattle, and buffaloes may pass through the digestive system undigested. However, if ground too finely, its consumption may decrease due to dough-like formation in the mouth.
